A Message from Dr. George F. Fiore, CCIU Executive Director

  • November 19, 2020

    Dear CCIU Staff and Families,

As the holidays approach, I would like to take a moment to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all of Team CCIU for your unwavering support and optimism this school year. I also want to summarize the new state health requirements for travel and mask wearing as we prepare to break for the Thanksgiving holiday, and how these new requirements impact us here at the CCIU.

On Tuesday, November 17, Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine announced targeted efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 in Pennsylvania, including updates to traveler testing and a strengthened masking order. In summary, the changes, which take effect on Friday, November 20, 2020, include the following:

    1. Pennsylvanians visiting any other state are required to have a negative COVID-19 test or to quarantine for 14 days upon return to Pennsylvania(does not apply to people who commute to and from another state for work or for medical treatment).

At the CCIU, this means staff and students who travel outside of Pennsylvania for recreation and leisure, as per the Governor’s order, will be required to test negative for COVID-19 before returning onsite to CCIU facilities for work or learning, or quarantine for 14 days.

Students and staff will need to present a negative COVID-19 test result to their principal or supervisor in order to return to school or work onsiteThose students or staff who are unable to provide a negative COVID-19 test result, as per the Governors order, will be required to quarantine and unable to report to school or work onsite for the duration of the quarantine. Staff in these circumstances will need to utilize sick time (FFCRA-emergency paid sick leave or accrued CCIU paid sick leave), vacation or personal days or unpaid leave. Staff may be able to telework if their position permitsPlease consult with your HR generalist to discuss your paid and/or unpaid leave options and/or the work-from-home request process (if your position lends itself to telework).

Please alert your principal or supervisor immediately if you are planning to travel outside of Pennsylvania in order to discuss your options for returning to school and work.

    1. Masks are required to be worn indoors and outdoors if you are away from your home.

      1. When outdoors, a mask must be worn if you are not able to remain physically distant (at least sixfeet away) from someone not in your household the entire time you are outdoors. At the CCIU, this means students and staff will be required to wear a mask on CCIU grounds when they are outside with others or may come into contact with othersSustained physical distance means the practice of staying at least six feet away from others to avoid becoming a close contact.

      2. When indoors, masks will now be required even whenphysically distant from members not in your household. Even if you are six feet apart, you will need to wear a mask while inside if with people other than members of your household. At the CCIU, this means anyone who does not have an office or who does not work alone will be required to wear a mask. Working alone is defined as a person by themselves inside an office with four walls and a door, or a lone worker inside a cubicle with three walls and a door or entryway, where walls are high enough to block the breathing zone of all people walking by, and the worker's activity will not require anyone to come inside that person's workspace. If you have questions, please contact your principal or supervisor for guidance.

We understand the new health and safety requirements are inconvenient, but we are committed to following the best practices and recommendations of the Chester County Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Our goal is to limit COVID-19 exposure within our CCIU community, so that we can continue to offer in-person instruction safely.

Remember, if you plan to travel outside of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, please inform your principal or supervisor immediately upon confirmation of your travel plans. Please contact your principal or direct supervisor for guidance or any questions related to wearing a mask while working or learning onsite at a CCIU school or building.

Again, I greatly appreciate everyone’s cooperation and partnership during this time. We will get through this together. Stay healthy and be safe.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. George F. Fiore
    Executive Director
