• Classroom Monitor Pilot Program

    For the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years, Act 91 of 2021 (HB 412, Section 1218), allows people with 60 college credits or paraprofessionals with at least three years of experience to fill in for teachers as “classroom monitors." To become a classroom monitor, eligible candidates must have a PDE permit. Classroom monitors are allowed to oversee classrooms, but not instruct students, grade assignments, or create work. The classroom monitor pilot program is being offered through June 30, 2023.

    Who's eligible to be a classroom monitor?

    To be a Classroom monitor, candidates must meet the following criteria:

    • REQUIRED: Has attained a minimum age of twenty-five (25) years
    • MUST HAVE ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING:
      • Has completed at least sixty (60) semester hours or the equivalent of courses at a college or university located in Pennsylvania and accredited by a regional accrediting agency
      • OR has at least three (3) years' experience as a paraprofessional in a Pennsylvania school entity and is currently employed as a paraprofessional in a Pennsylvania school entity

    How do I become a classroom monitor?

    If the conditions above are met, the classroom monitor candidate must complete a training on classroom management provided by an intermediate unit.

    After completion of the classroom management course, your school entity may request that the Pennsylvania Department of Education issue a classroom monitor permit.

    What is included in the CCIU's Classroom Management Course?

    In response to Act 91 of 2021 (HB 412), the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) is offering a classroom management course to assist interested candidates in receiving the necessary permit to work in schools as classroom monitors.

    During this asynchronous online training, participants will engage in four learning modules:
    Module 1: Professional expectations
    Module 2: Creating an environment of respect through positive relationships
    Module 3: Fostering a culture of learning for all students
    Module 4: Responding to behavior through restorative practices

    This training is an online asynchronous course that includes pre-recorded video lectures as well as participant reflection assessments. The course takes 3.5 hours to complete.
